Your Guide to Hiring a Provence Wedding Photographer

Sebastien Boudot is a wedding photographer based in Provence, working with international couples across the Luberon, the Alpilles, and the French Riviera since 2008.

As a Provence wedding photographer, I know this region is not just a backdrop. It is a light, a pace, a particular way the sun sets on fields. From the hills of the Luberon to the small roads leading to Château de Robernier, this area has its own rhythm, and photographing a wedding here means learning to follow it.

I have been working in Provence since 2008, covering weddings at the Château de Sannes, Galinier de Lourmarin, Château Martinay, and private villas around Gordes. My approach here is the same as in Provence: present, discreet, unhurried.

Capturing Provence: The Photographic Perspective

The Light in Provence

The Provençal light is legendary among photographers and painters alike. The mistral wind keeps the air remarkably clear, creating a luminosity that is both intense and soft.

For wedding photography, this means rich, natural colors and a depth that no artificial lighting can replicate.

The Best Time of Year

May, June, September and early October are the ideal months for a wedding in Provence. The lavender blooms from mid-June to mid-July, creating the iconic purple landscapes that many couples dream of. July and August are warm and vibrant but can be hot — temperatures often exceed 35°C, which affects both comfort and planning. Spring brings wildflowers and soft green landscapes, while September offers the golden light of the grape harvest. I particularly love shooting in late June, when the lavender is at its peak and the evening light lingers until well past nine.

Though I do not yet have images from this venue to share, I have visited it many times and can say that the light here, particularly in the golden hour, is among the most beautiful in the region. It is a venue that commands the photographer’s full attention and rewards it generously.

“Sebastien captured beautifully the precious moments of our special day. The photos are really stunning and perfectly as we wanted them to be. Sebastien is also a good listener and with his strong experience in wedding photography, he knew how to keep us at ease in front of his lense. Sebastien knows how to remain discreet during the ceremony to immortalised unique photos of us and our guests. Furthermore, Sebastien went extra-mile for us by being flexible and understanding while we had to make few adjustments and last minute changes due to the unforeseen rain after the ceremony. Thank you for everything! Nurani & Mark”

“Sebastien was an absolute pleasure to work with! We planned our wedding from the US so finding vendors is always a little extra challenging. The moment we met Sebastien in person we immediately felt so comfortable. Not only was he a joy to work with but he captured the essence of our wedding so perfectly. When looking through photos you can feel the emotion. My fiance, our guests and me are so in love with the photographs! We hope to find a reason to work with him again.”

★★★★★ — Google Review · May 2024

“Choosing a wedding photographer, for us, was one of the most important tasks when it came to planning our wedding. We dedicated our time to finding someone who we adored and someone who’s work connected to us emotionally. When we came across Sebastien’s portfolio, we instantly knew that he was the wedding photographer for us. In the lead up to our big day and during the wedding day itself, he was professional, helpful, always smiling and continued to make us giggle and feel relaxed throughout. It was important for us to work with a photographer who captured our day authentically and romantically. We both love natural and raw wedding photos that capture the true feelings and emotions during a wedding. We also love B&W images and images that have a wonderful timeless and classic, yet modern and artistic feel to them. Sebastien’s work is exactly that. Once we received the photos back, which came back extremely quickly, we were both in tears with just how beautiful they were. A wedding day can go so quickly, but looking back at these brought back some of the most happiest memories we will both remember for a lifetime. We can’t thank or recommend Sebastien enough. FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What photography style do you use for Provence weddings?

Documentary and editorial. I blend into the celebration to capture authentic emotions and candid moments, while also creating deliberate couple portraits in the exceptional light of Provence. The result is contemporary, timeless, and never staged.

2. Where are you based, and do you cover all of Provence?

I am based in the Camargue, roughly two hours from Aix-en-Provence and at the heart of the Luberon. I cover the entire Provence — from Avignon to Bonnieux — without travel surcharges for most destinations.

3. How long until we receive our wedding photos in Provence?

Typically, three weeks from the wedding date. This is significantly faster than the industry average, and it applies whether your wedding is in the Luberon, Château de Robernier, or anywhere in Provence.

4. How many photographers will be at our wedding?

Coverage always starts with me. A second photographer is available on request, and I recommend it for larger venues or when multiple simultaneous moments require comprehensive coverage, particularly at the Luberon venues, where the ceremony and cocktail reception can unfold in separate spaces.

5. How do we book you for our Provence wedding?

We start with a conversation — by email or video call — to understand your vision and confirm availability. I then send you a tailored proposal. To secure your date, a signed contract and deposit are required. I recommend booking 9 to 18 months in advance for peak season dates in Provence.

6. How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in Provence?

Between 9 and 18 months for dates between May and October. The Luberon and high-demand Provence venues often have their own booking timelines that push couples to confirm vendors earlier. Reach out as soon as your venue is confirmed.

7. Do you speak English?

Yes. The majority of my clients in Provence are international couples from the UK, the US, Scandinavia, and Australia. All communication, from first enquiry to gallery delivery, is conducted in English.

8. Can you photograph a civil ceremony in Provence?

Absolutely. Civil ceremonies in Provence take place at the local mairie (town hall), and I am experienced in photographing these intimate and meaningful moments. Many couples combine a civil ceremony at the mairie with a symbolic or religious ceremony at their chosen venue.
